In the performance, Accelerations, Joyce Hinterding and David Haines open a channel to the Earth’s murmurs. VLF radio, telluric currents, cosmic noise, and the emissions of nearby electronics form a volatile sound world that is navigated like weather. Within a real-time game engine, the performers move through a virtual landscape—an uncanny arrangement grown from photogrammetric traces of the terrain below Mount Blackheath and the Shipley Plateau—where electromagnetic forces shape the contours of the audible.
Accelerations is an event-driven encounter with invisible architectures: electromagnetic forces, synthetic terrain, and the performers’ own sensor-mediated presence as speed core. A drift through radio-charged air, geological memory, and the hum of contemporary technologies. Accelerations reveal the Earth not as a silent mass, but as a dynamic transmitter whose signals can be walked through, shaped, and momentarily experienced. —volatile, luminous, and always on the edge of becoming something else.
David Haines and Joyce Hinterding live in the Blue Mountains, on the land of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples and work both collaboratively and independently. Their artworks are characterised by a concern for electromagnetic energy and the environment. Their solo and collaborative practices span a wide variety of media, from large-scale immersive video installation and experimental audio works for performance to discrete objects, images and aroma compositions. They often combine media with a concern for the intersection between hallucination and the landscape, incorporating sound, installation, video, performance, sculpture, photography, drawing and computer game technologies. They have released audio works with Sigma Editions/Antiopic. David makes music under the moniker Pliny, the Alpinist, and they collaborate with Michael Morley as SunValley and are represented by Syrup Contemporary in Sydney.
They have exhibited extensively nationally and internationally, including at the 23rd Biennale of Sydney, Rīvus 2022, and the 2002 and 1992 Sydney Biennales. In 2015, their work was featured by the MCA in the survey exhibition Energies Haines & Hinterding, and in 2016, they produced an extensive monograph exhibition titled Résonances Magnétiques - La Panacée, Montpellier, France. In 2019, Joyce was awarded the Australia Council Emerging & Experimental Arts Award, and in 2017, David was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship. Their collaborative work received the Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica in the hybrid arts category in 2015, and they won the Ann Lander New Media art Award at The Art Gallery of NSW in 2011. They have exhibited in numerous international Biennales, including MetaMorph, Nice to be in Orbit, Trondheim, Norway, 2016, Superlight the 2nd Biennial 01SJ, San Jose Museum Art, California, USA, 2008, the Seoul International Media Art Biennale, Korea 2008 the Istanbul Biennial 2001 and represented Australia in the 26th Bienal de Sao Paulo: Image Smugglers in a Free Territory, Brazil, 2004,
