Part of Field Lines presented with the Guardian
This creative walking meditation workshop focuses on connecting with the vibrant networks of mycelium and lively cycles of the soil beneath our feet. Led by artist Kath Fries, we will be exploring contemplative movements of walking and breathing, along with visualisation techniques to attentively feel more deeply into our interdependence with the earth.
Step by step, and breath by breath, we will be using simple mindful practices and walking meditation to imaginatively feel into the vast networks of mycelium beneath our feet, developing ways of understanding how we are inextricably part of our surroundings and living cycles of growth, death, decay and renewal.
Taking place in Blackheath, on Dharug and Gundungurra Country, we will be reflecting on the fascinating funga, flora, fauna interdependences in this area of the Blue Mountains. Mycelium Walking Meditation Workshop invites us to focused embodied engagements of being present within the complexities of these endemic and introduced entangled ecologies.
Kath Fries has working with fungi and mycelium as metaphor, material and co- creator over the past eight years. She often shares walking meditation workshops that interweave her Buddhist mindfulness practices with her art practice, to open up different perspectives and conversations about caring for nature by becoming enchanted by the complexities and interdependence of ecosystems. By involving the heart, body and mind, we can reach beyond what we just can see, to better feel into our vibrant extricable entanglements within the more-than-human world. In tandem with Superposition, Kath is an artist-in-residence at BigCi in Bilpin, developing her site-responsive walking meditation practice and learning about the fungal mycelial relations and networks in the Blue Mountains, on Dharug and Gundungurra Country.
