Programmed by Soda Jerk, Mount Vic Flicks will host a cinema transmission of nonstop nuggets from the Australian Roo Wave. Art film, ozsploits and artefacts from the un-canon of Australian culture streamed on the big screen. A wilding where cinephilia leaks into gutter rap and crunchy YouTube relics go head to head with masterworks and microhistories. Small joys and art giants. Butch aesthetics and soft porn. Where TISM meets ISMs. Where theft is a politic and the poor image is pious. Where the highbrow meets the lowbrow in the ecstatic horizon of the monobrow.
The program will surf like a channel throughout the weekend and audiences are encouraged to drop in to ride the roo wave for short or longer stays. A single ticket serves as a pass for return visits all weekend.
Soda Jerk is an artist duo who make sample-based films with a rogue documentary impulse. They are fundamentally interested in the politics of images; how they circulate, whom they benefit and how they can be undone. Their feature film Hello Dankness premiered at the Berlinale in 2023 and has received numerous cinema awards including Best Narrative Feature at the Atlanta Film Festival and the Blackmagic Design Australian Innovation Award.
Hello Dankness followed Soda Jerk’s controversial political revenge fable Terror Nullius (2018), which was disowned by its commissioning body who called the film “UnAustralian”. The Guardian named the “dizzyingly ambitious satirical work” one of the best Australian films of the decade, and the Sydney Morning Herald placed it 28th on the Top 50 Australian Movies of All Time.
